“Feeling real is more than existing; it is finding a way to exist as oneself…”

Donald Winnicott

A universal human need is the desire to feel seen, understood and accepted. Many of our struggles in connecting with ourselves and others stem from the emotional barriers we hold — psychotherapy can help to increase our capacity to find deeper clarity, satisfaction and meaning in life.

Susan Sanders LCSW-R NYC Therapist Brooklyn Therapist

I am Susan Sanders (pronouns she, her, hers), a licensed clinical social worker with a private psychotherapy practice in New York and New Jersey. Since the pandemic, I am mainly holding virtual sessions but maintain an office in Brooklyn Heights for those preferring in-person meetings. I provide counseling for children, adolescents, and adults and also am skilled at couples and family therapy.

The information on this site will address some of your questions but the best way to determine your comfort in working together is to meet for a consultation.

Choosing a therapist can be a challenging process. I am committed to helping you and/or your child overcome obstacles, find healthier means of relating to others and achieve a greater sense of well being. I look forward to meeting you.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

I received a master’s degree in social work from the University of California – Berkeley and pursued post-graduate training and supervision in the Bay area and in New York.

For 12 years, I worked as a Senior Social Worker at Maimonides Medical Center Child and Adolescent Service where I provided therapy to children and their families and supervised graduate level social work students.

I have worked with adults on all life issues including depression, anxiety, relationships, identity, grief and loss, work, stress, aging, health, parenting, sexuality and life choices. I have become an expert on psychosocial issues related to transplant, having consulted for many years with a major New York City center to evaluate patients needing transplant and potential living donors. I was involved in supporting patients and their families in all phases of the transplant process.

I offer a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental manner and provide the support needed to help understand what is getting in your way and to begin making changes.

APPROACH TO THERAPY

My experience with children and adolescents enables me to enter a child’s world and gain their trust.

My therapeutic work with adults is greatly enhanced by knowledge and understanding of child development.

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Therapy is a safe environment in which to explore your feelings and the patterns which may be holding you back.

The therapeutic relationship provides a space to bring all your hopes, fears, doubts…..any feeling which is of concern. I often tell patients that there is nothing they cannot say in therapy.
